Championship Weekend Tournament Rules

U9-U18 General Policies

  • 3 goal cap per player per game (excluding overtime and the shootout)
  • 3 minor penalties in one game and the player will be ejected for the remainder of the game
  • Minimum number of players to field a team is 7 and a goalie; major aged skaters may be called up from below to bring the team to 10 and a goalie. Goalies are called from within the division first, then from below.
  • No player may play more than 4 games in one day
  • Electronic game sheets will be used
  • Games may start up to 15 minutes early
All other regular CYO game play and disciplinary rules are in effect.

Scoring and Game Setup

Points will be awarded as follows:
  • Two (2) points for a win
  • One (1) point for a tie
  • Zero (0) points for a loss
Round Robin Games: No time outs. No overtime. Games may be curfewed at the discretion of the convenor.

Semi-Final and Championship Games: 1 x 30 second timeout per team. With overtime (see below).

Tie Breakers: Total Points, then Number of Wins, then Head to Head, then Least Amount of Penalties, then Lowest Goals Against. If still tied, the tournament office will use a coin toss to break the tie.

Mercy Rule: If the goal differential is more than five (5) goals the clock will run in the last 5 minutes of the 3rd period.

Scores will not show or record more than a 5-goal differential.

Overtime

Overtime is available in the semis and finals only. Teams will not change ends for overtime. Penalties carry over into overtime.

5 minute 3 on 3 (stop time). Teams must start with 3 skaters and a goalie. Any player still serving a penalty at the end of regulation time may not participate in the 3 on 3.

If still tied after the 3 on 3, teams move to a shootout. The first 3 shooters must be declared in the electronic game sheet BEFORE the start of the game. Any player still serving a penalty at the end of the 3-on-3 may NOT participate in the shootout.

Goaltenders cannot be changed during the shootout except due to injury.

All players on the bench must have the opportunity to participate in the shootout before the first shooter can go again; and then it must follow the same player order through the list until a winner is declared.

Rotation Rules

CYO Rotation Rules are in effect for all games. Games will be monitored.

Rotation is a "next in line" setup; players must stay in the same order throughout the entire game. All players are to be awarded equal ice time (no stacking lines). Players can change out their own doors (forwards and defence).

The first player to change on the fly starts the full line change, and the remaining 4 players must change at the next whistle.
  • Example: While the game is underway, a winger changes on the fly. At or before the next whistle, the other winger, the center, and the 2 defence must change to complete the full line change.
  • Example: The play moves to the other end of the ice so the 2 defence change on the fly. This kicks in the line change, and now the 3 forwards must change at or before the next whistle to complete the full line change.
SHORT SHIFTING IS NOT ALLOWED. This is when a coach puts a weak player out for a face off then calls them back right after the draw in order to put a stronger player from the next line on instead. This violates CYO’s fair play rule: all players get equal ice time.

Penalized players MUST RETURN TO THE BENCH once the penalty is over, regardless of if their line is on the ice; they return to the bench and wait for their line to come off then get back in their order.

If the goalie is pulled, the next player in line goes out (either a forward or a defence).

If double shifting a player (i.e. you have 2 centers and 3 sets of wingers for the game) the player who is double shifting goes out last in their line change. Using the example of 2 centers, the centers change after the wingers to prevent having 2 centers on the ice at the same time.

Coaches must use the same rotation for the entire game (no changing at the end of a period).

Rotation rules apply to overtime.

Rotation Rule Violations: If a team is found in violation of rotation rules or short shifting players, the monitor will inform the timekeeper to stop the game and inform the referees. Game will not resume until proper rotation has been restored. Any goal scored while out of rotation will be disallowed.
  • 1st offence - game stops and rotation restored
  • 2nd offence in the same game - bench minor, rotation restored
  • 3rd offence in the same game - bench minor, ejection of the head coach for the rest of the game
Any rotation infraction in the last two minutes of the third period, or during overtime, will result in a 2-minute bench penalty for the offending team. The offending team will rectify the rotation immediately and send one of the players who were one the ice, in proper rotation when the infraction occurred, to serve the bench minor.

Discipline

Any team officials or players receiving a game ejection in the last 10 minutes of the 3rd period will be automatically suspended for the next game.

Ejected players must stay in the change room until the game is complete, or change and return to the lobby (leave the rink area).

There are no parents or spectators allowed in or near the timekeeper booth at any time. Only team officials, on-ice officials, rotation monitors, or tournament convenors are allowed to be in or near the timekeeper both.

There are no coaches, parents, or spectators allowed in or near the referees room at any time. Only the timekeeper or the tournament convenors are to to be speaking with the on-ice officials, unless otherwise directed by the on-ice officials.

The on-ice referee's decisions are final and can not be protested or appealed.

Maltreatment rules are in full effect.

CYO Minor Hockey has a ZERO tolerance policy towards abuse of on-ice officials. Any abuse towards an on-ice official by any player or coach, at any time, before, during, or after the game, will not be tolerated and will result in the individual facing immediate removal from the tournament and a possible maltreatment filing.

Decisions of the tournament office are final.
